Sweet Times (in progress)

Sweet Times is a one-act set in current-day New York City about two people adrift in the world after losing someone central to their lives. Mark was John's best friend and Maya's boyfriend, and his absence has left both of them fundamentally untethered from everything and everyone around them.

John moves through the city like a ghost. He stands still while the world rushes past him, drifts through school hallways, deflecting invitations with maybes he never intends to keep, and struggles to express himself.

Maya is equally lost, just in a different way. Her cold and dismissive mother is evil, with pointed remarks about her eating, her grades, and her attachment to people, her deceased boyfriend. At a bar with friends, on a phone call, or when she is by herself, she feels completely lost.

They find each other at Riverside Park, a place where they hung out with Mark, late at night, both having wandered out with nowhere to go. The show ends with a new beginning. They are two people who loved the same person in different ways, and in finding each other as friends who have gone through an enormous loss, they finally find the one thing that has been missing since they lost him: someone who truly understands.

The Music

Lonely Rain (John)

This is John’s opening song, where he laments the loss and loneliness he feels since his best friend has died. This song opens up the show.

To Never Know (Maya)

At this point in the show, Maya feels disconnected from the world because of her loss. This song establishes her grief.

TRANSITION INTO SCENE 4

One of the cues for a scene change

Dancing in Space (Maya with John at the End)

Maya has told her evil mom off and wanders off to Riverside Park. John happens to be there already, and they are both living in their memories of Mark at a place they all shared.
